And Other Poems"
Kara paced with angry strides. To think that the Sal-Vor of Krypton, her cousin Kal-El, the scion of the House of El, was a slave! And a pleasure slave at that!
The fury scalded her from within. She could barely see straight as a red haze filmed her vision. Her hands curled into fists, and she dearly wanted to smash something.
And that arrogant sonafabitch, that Bruce Wayne, taking advantage of her amnesiac cousin in the worst way. She shuddered in revulsion at the thought of what Kal-El had been forced to do in that slaveowner’s bed.
She would keep her word not to harm Bruce Wayne but that did not mean that he would not pay.
Her fist rammed through the wall.
Dick loved to explore new places, and Queens’ Castle was endlessly intriguing. Roy and Melody were great guides, showing him places and telling him stories about the old house.
Dick was pleased to see that the estate was located by the ocean just like Wayne Manor. He had become addicted to the sounds of the sea and the spray of salt air.
“It’s beautiful here.”
Roy and Melody smiled as all three leaned on the seawall.
“Sure beats an inner city brothel,” Roy said.
“Or the Caldwell horror house,” Melody said darkly.
Dick shuddered. “Yeah.”
The three stared out at the dazzlingly-blue sea, Roy finally breaking the silence. “Do you think that the Abolitionist Movement will ever bring about freedom?”
“I don’t know.” Dick watched a seagull bob on the sparkling water. He turned his collar up against the wind, stamping his booted feet.
Melody and Roy said nothing, the wind whipping in from the sea.
“I heard something interesting.”
Bruce looked up at Ollie. They were sitting in the library drinking tea and making business calls.
“One of Edmund Caldwell’s slaves was stolen.”
Bruce took a sip of tea. He liked the mild mint flavor. “Where did you hear that?”
“I’ve got sources.” Ollie frowned. “Why isn’t Caldwell screaming it from the rooftops?”
“Maybe he considers it embarrassing.”
“Yeah, a guy who tortures and maims for laughs probably would consider a slave kidnapping to be a disgrace to the family name.”
Bruce smirked at the sarcasm dripping from Ollie’s words. “Yes, I’d say you were right.”
Ollie’s grin was wolfish. “’Bout time someone put one over on that old fox.” His eyes asked the question, sparkling when Bruce smiled. He sipped his tea. “I hear that Wonder Woman is going to officially ally herself with the N.A.S.”
“She’s the perfect hero to do it.”
Ollie nodded. “Absolutely.”
“We’re really on our way, Ollie.”
The blond nodded. “Maybe she’ll show up in Gotham again besides Halloween week.”
“Yes, she always shows up then,” Bruce said thoughtfully as Ollie took another call.
King Jodelle watched the monitors closely. They were showing slight improvement, but Jovan was still in a coma. He bit his lip.
“Oh, love, to think your passion for the Cause brought you this.” His heart ached. “I have the same passion, but you are the one who spearheaded our Abolitionist Society. You were the face of freedom, and now…” Anger blazed in his sapphire-blue eyes. "I will not allow those who did this to you to get away with it. They will pay.” He curled his hand into a fist.
Jodelle looked up to see Sefran’s concerned face. “Yes?”
“You should rest, Majesty, especially with your appearance tonight at the opening of the Winter Festival.”
Jodelle frowned. “I will not be attending, Sefran.”
The High Chancellor’s sadness was evident on his face. “Majesty, our people must see you. This is one of our High Holy Days.”
Jodelle turned back to his husband. “I cannot make merry while my Beloved lies in this bed.”
Sefran bowed his head. “I can ask Princess Jasmine to officiate.”
“Thank you.” As Sefran turned to leave, he was stopped by Jodelle. “I also thank you for coming here and doing your duty, Sefran. I can always count on you.”
Sefran nodded, pride in his eyes.
After the faithful Chancellor had departed, Jodelle looked at his husband, who appeared as if in a deep sleep like one of those Princes in a fairytale.
You are the Prince of my heart, Beloved.
He smiled a little at the fanciful sentiment, but as pragmatic as Jovan could be, he was a romantic at heart.
You’ve taught me so much, Jovan. I love you so much.
He closed his eyes, praying to the Mother Goddess Of All.
Johnny laughed as Mike got the bucketful of water in the face as he opened the kitchen cabinet. The Phantom had struck again!
The rest of the crew guffawed, smirked and outright laughed as they sat around the table, Chet smiling triumphantly.
“Congratulations, Phantom,” said Mike, wiping strands of wet hair out of his eyes. “Of course, you know this means war.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Mike, but the Phantom is taking note.”
More snickers went around the table, Mike muttering as he went to the locker room to change into a dry shirt.
“You better watch out, pal. It’s always the quiet ones,” said Hank as he turned the page of the newspaper.
“Sure, Cap, the Phantom plans for all contingencies. Like the Batman, y’know?”
“Thank the Spirits that the Phantom isn’t Robin. Imagine him in shorts?” Johnny muttered sotto voce as Roy nearly choked on his coffee while Marco burst out laughing. On the couch, Henry the basset hound blinked, yawned, and rolled over.
“Oh, watch out, John. The Phantom sees all, knows all. You may get a visit from him soon,” Chet said.
Johnny grinned. “Thanks for the heads-up.”
Chet merely smirked as he got up to re-fill his coffee cup.
Johnny felt extremely relaxed. Being accepted by these brave men as one of their own meant the world to him. Only having Roy’s love meant more.
As he listened to the joking around him, he knew that he would die for each and every one of them if necessary.
Edmund sat in his study. The drapes were open, revealing winter’s early darkness. His hand gripped the head of his cane as his mind worked with cold, calculating precision.
His slave was gone. He doubted that she had the brains to figure out a way to successfully escape. Therefore, she had had help.
He would bet half his fortune that Bruce Wayne was involved. That sniveling, posturing, so-called Prince was pandering to the mealymouths out there. He would do anything to get in good with that slutty cousin of his, who had dared take on the role of prosecutor against him, and that disgraceful Senator Lang, or that Kansas busybody, Martha Kent. All three were slutty redheads. What he wouldn’t give to collar them and see their legs spread wide, open and ready for a good fucking.
He sighed. Women should know their place, and their place was their legs spread and waiting for be fucked. Yes, that was women’s place.
He rubbed his thumb over the gold hawkshead of his cane. And certain men should also do the same, open and ready to be fucked. The Wayne Prize would look just right on his knees, thighs parted and mouth open, head yanked back by the hair.
And The Squire? Once he came of age, he would have that ass. Of that he was certain.
Outside the mansion, snow began to fall.
