Author’s Note: Written for my LJ Third Anniversary Fic Request Meme for northern_star. Character: Dick Grayson. Prompt: Hot chocolate. :)
Dick sat in the café, snow falling in a kaleidoscope of winter beauty framed by blue-and-white-curtained windows. The café was warm and cozy, filled with tables and booths lined along the walls. A collection of brightly-colored plates was set on the shelf, homemade dolls for sale scattered along a second shelf, representing different countries: a Dutch girl in white cap, blue dress, and wooden shoes; a Greek man in nineteenth-century national dress; a Swahili in colorful head wrap and caftan, a Mountie in dress reds, and many more.
Dick sat at a table close by the stone fireplace, warmed by the fire crackling in the hearth. He worked on his laptop, eating sugar-dusted butter cookies (not as good as Alfred’s, but close) and drinking hot chocolate in a blue-and-white mug. He regretted the absence of tiny marshmallows like he got at home but enjoyed a dollop of spiced apple whipped cream on top of his drink.
He curled his fingers around the mug, sipping the rich chocolate, wrapping his long legs around the chair legs. He thought of romantic evenings by the fire and smiled.
His romance was still new, still fresh, and Dick wanted to savor it just as much as this divine chocolate.
His senses, always on alert due to his circus and Bat-training, seemed even sharper nowadays. And why not? He thrilled in the touch of silky skin, the taste of sweet lips, the smell of strawberry-scented shampoo in luxurious hair.
He sipped the chocolate, listening to the hiss and pop of the fire and watching people hurrying by the café, hunched against the cold. A child ran in front of her mother, catching the flakes on her tongue, red-cheeked with cold and laughing.
A tiny chime sounded and he looked at his laptop. He smiled as he saw the sender of the e-mail and opened the message. Clicking on the keys, he replied and went back to sipping his chocolate as he waited, the murmur of conversation around him as he resumed his college work.
The smell of cranberry muffins fresh out of the oven drifted from the kitchen. Dick immediately ordered two, happily bringing his prizes back to his table.
He bit into one, the warm tartness of the cranberries a tasty complement to the sweet dusting of sugar sparkling on top.
He savored each bite, washing it down with hot chocolate, typing on the keys.
The tiny bells over the door jingled as a gust of cold air swept in with the newcomer from outside.
Dick looked up and smiled as his lover returned his smile and headed for his table, a mug of hot chocolate and a warm cranberry muffin waiting, complete with a delicious young man.
