Clark entered The Talon, the smell of pumpkin muffins and spiced apple cider delicious in the warmth of the coffeehouse. Lana’s artistic taste showed in the autumn colors decorating the place, crisp reds, oranges and yellows in leaf motifs, cornstalks tied to pillars and large pumpkins on the floor, smaller ones on the tables. A handmade Witch doll flew her broom over the door, and a Witch figurine was set on the counter by the cappuccino machine.
Clark loved this time of year. The final harvest was in, the days and nights were growing colder but the trade-off was the coziness of warm homes and places like The Talon. While the summer sun kept him at his most energized, autumn sun had its own special qualities.
And Halloween was almost here. There was always a special magic in the air around that holiday.
He grinned. Some would say every day was Halloween in Smallville.
The clientele was mostly kids from Smallville High, just released from school. A few of the townsfolk were mixed in, elderly Mr. and Mrs. Kendall sipping hot chocolate in a booth, chatting with ancient Rose Abernathy, a woman of spunk half her age. Truck driver Jed Travers was drinking coffee with two farmers, the Morvell twins.
He scanned the room for Lex. Ah, ha! He was in their usual booth, lucky to get it at this busy time of day. He was reading a file folder while sipping a latte, dressed in his usual black with a light-purple shirt.
Clark’s heart leaped as he saw Lex. He wasn’t fooling himself as to his feelings. He knew that Lex was the one.
He couldn’t help smiling as he approached the booth.
“Hi, Clark.” Lex’s smile was a beautiful thing. It lit up his face and his eyes.
Clark slid into the booth and sniffed. “Pumpkin latte?”
Lex grinned. “With cream and cinnamon shavings on top. Delicious.”
Clark signaled Lana for the same thing. “Glad the humble offerings of The Talon suits your palate.”
“Oh, it does. It must be this country air. Has my appetite looking for savory goodies.”
“Craving good, simple food and drink?”
“Sometimes the simple and uncomplicated is best.”
Lex’s lips curved up into a slight smile, his gray-blue eyes steady on Clark, who felt his pulse race.
“Spicy pumpkin latte with cream,” Lana said cheerfully as she arrived with Clark’s cup.
She flashed them both a smile and went to another table to take their order.
Clark sipped his latte, the blend of spice and cream exquisite on his tongue, a mix of simple country flavors with extra spices. Clark licked cream off his upper lip, Lex’s breath hitching.
Clark knew what he wanted. The magic in the air sparkled all around the two of them.
He leaned forward and kissed Lex firmly on the lips, tasting cinnamon and pumpkin.
When he drew back, Lex blinked, then smiled. He grasped Clark’s hand and squeezed.
The only one who’d see them kiss was Mrs. Abernathy, who winked and smiled.
Clark calmly took a sip of his latte.
Pumpkin was definitely his favorite flavor.
