Good thing it’s only pre-season. ;)
Tom and Randy and some of the other starters didn’t play, and let’s hope Tom is as healthy as a horse because his back-ups are simply awful. Matt Cassell was dreadful and Matt Guiterrez and Kevin O’Connell weren’t much better, though raw rookie O’Connell was the best of the bunch.
Look, preseason is very vanilla, and while players and coaches want to win the games due to their competitive nature, it’s really not important. Teams are evaluating rookies and guys brought in to camp to compete, and the first-stringers rarely play more than a series in the first of the four games.
The offense was out-of-sync all night, but still got it to one point (they blew a two-point conversion).
The defense was much better. Our All-Pro defensive lineman, Richard Seymour, is healthy for the first time in two years, and the excellent Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren are in fine form.
The rookies, Jarod Mayo and Terence Wheatley showed promise. Mayo hit a guy so hard that his helmet went flying! Always a crowd-pleaser.
So it was a frustrating night but promise was shown. Also, I missed most of the second half due to the storms that rolled in around 9:00 and didn’t leave until midnight. Grr!!
