THE FIRST TRIAL:
The Dark Knight
Braved the lake
To snatch the cup,
His to take.
For his True Love,
And Heart's Desire.
The Sleeping Beauty"
14th Century C.E.
The first Trial brought Bruce and Dick to a deep, shimmering lake in the valley, fed by the nearby ocean. Bruce shed his armor and girded his loins, carrying a dagger. Dick provided him with an herb that would allow him to breath underwater for thirty minutes.
“At the bottom of the lake is a goblet, held fast by seaweed,” said Dick. “Bring it to the surface, and your first task is done.”
“And it’s guarded by…?”
“…a creature of the sea.”
Bruce sighed. Of course! He waded in. “Wish me luck.”
“Good fortune, Bruce.”
Bruce ate the herb, its taste slightly bitter, and he took a deep breath as he dove.
Striations of light shimmered around him as schools of silvery fish swam by. The blue-green of the water darkened as he swam deeper.
He searched, conscious of time slipping away. Dick had said that he would only have one chance. Fail, and the Trials were done for him.
He kept the memory of Kal-El’s face in his mind’s eye as he sought the goblet. He had to succeed! He was Kal’s True Love; he had to be! Never had he felt such love as he had upon viewing Kal’s face.
There! A glint of gold!
Bruce swam deeper, hand reaching out with the dagger…
A large fishtail knocked his hand away. He barely retained his hold on the dagger.
His eyes widened. A mermaid!
Silvery long hair billowed out as the lovely face filled his vision, sea-green eyes drawing him in for a kiss…
He gasped as arms strong as a blacksmith’s banded his chest, squeezing and squeezing and squeezing as the beautiful mouth contorted into an ugly moue, the eyes hard and cold as Bruce thrashed, trying to breathe…
He began to black out, desperately bringing his dagger up and into its chest, a horrible shriek splitting his head as black fluid spewed out, the creature writhing, the hilt gleaming dully between its breasts.
Bruce pulled the dagger out, swimming quickly to the goblet and cutting it free of the seaweed. Silvery strands began to wrap around it but he cut those, too, trying to ignore more shrieks as he swam as fast as he could, breaking the surface, coughing and gasping, holding the sparkling goblet aloft.
“Two minutes to spare,” Dick announced cheerfully.
