It's really amazing that the war is so often overlooked because in some ways, it's more relevant today than either World War II or Vietnam.
The Cold War has ended and Germany is reunited, Vietnam is reunited, and Korea is still divided with the most heavily-armed border in the world. It continues to be a hotspot since technically North and South Korea are still at war, never having signed a peace treaty. The economy of South Korea is the fourth largest economy in Asia and the 11th largest in the world, a far cry from the Stalinist-style society to the North.
South Korea is commemorating this anniversary with some extra acknowledgment. People with first-hand experience in the war are a shrinking population.
South Korea donated masks to the VA in honor of Korean War veterans, and will do so for other countries who were part of the U.N. forces.
