“Life in Smallville is never dull.”
Clark laughed at his mother’s dry statement.
“So the…King…and his general…are staying at Lex’s?” Jonathan asked as he poured syrup over his pancakes.
Clark nodded, copying his father. “Until they get up to speed.”
“Won’t that be difficult to do with over 2300 years of history to catch up on?”
“The spell seems to give them quick learning powers. And they were intelligent to begin with.”
Jonathan shook his head. “I’ll have to wish Lex good luck on this one.” Clark grinned. “This doesn’t have anything to do with meteor rocks?”
“I don’t think so.”
The phone rang.
“I’ll get it,” Clark said as he jumped up and picked up the wall phone receiver. “Hello? Oh, hi, Lex.” Clark listened for several seconds, then smiled. “Sure, I’ll be right over.” He hung up. “Is it okay for me to go over to Lex’s? He needs my help with his, um, guests. You know I won’t be late for school.”
“Go ahead, darling. I’m sure Lex does need help!” Martha chuckled.
Clark ran over ten minutes later. He was ushered into the dining room and lent his voice to persuading the king to stay at the mansion until he and Hephaestion had learned more about their new world.
“Very well,” Alexander said petulantly as he buttered his apple muffin. “But I want to go out in the world.”
“You shall, Your Highness,” Lex said. “Just not yet.”
Hephaestion smiled at his lover’s pout, exchanging a grin with Clark.

And so the learning continued, Clark helping Lex to teach their guests and Clark delighted to pick up insights for his term paper.
Lex found all three of them in the library when he came home from Metropolis one day.
“…and so the peace treaty was struck,” Alexander concluded.
“You were very fair to your opponents.”
“There’s no use robbing a man of his dignity if you can use him as an ally.” Alexander sipped his tea.
“So a conqueror must still be diplomatic,” Lex said as he took a seat by the fireplace.
“Quite so. It saves energy and keeps your empire together.”
“So all your opponents were worthy?” Clark asked.
“Most of them.” Alexander’s mouth quirked. “I would have liked to have gone up against the Amazons.”
“The Amazons?” Clark was surprised. “They were real, not just legend?”
“Very real. Fierce warrior women who, if they chose, could have joined my troops and probably would have outshone the men.” Alexander’s eyes sparkled.
“I’d have liked to have met them.”
As Clark asked more questions, Lex reflected on how cozy the scene was: a roaring fire, leaves falling from the trees outside the windows, tea served…
…all very domestic, and the fact that two of the people in the room were statues-come-to-life seemed hardly worth mentioning.
This was Smallville, after all.
“It’s good to have someone you can count on.”
Lex realized the conversation had moved from military matters.
Alexander smiled at his companion, grasping his hand, love shining between them.
Lex felt a surge of longing and very carefully did not look at Clark.

Lex nodded. “It’s Friday. Clark’s coming over after the Crows’ football game and we’re going to watch movies. You and Hephaestion are welcome to join us.”
The Macedonian had learned about movies and TV and was learning about the computer.
“I think we shall accept.”

Clark brought in two large bowls of popcorn and handed one to Alexander and Hephaestion. Both were eager to try yet another new food.
They were sitting on one end of the couch and Clark settled beside Lex on the other end, his customary position even when it was just the two of them. He balanced the bowl on his lap.
Alexander had been interested in a war movie. Lex chose the 1962 classic, The Longest Day, detailing the D-Day landings in Normandy because of the king’s interest in modern military strategy and the all-encompassing war that it had been a part of. Both he and Hephaestion were absorbed by the behind-the-scenes maneuverings and the impressive sea armada assembled off the coast of France.
Clark was pleased at Lex’s shoulder brushing his as they watched the movie. Friday night was the best night of the week.
When the first bowl of popcorn was empty, Alexander held it out and requested another. Clark gave Lex their bowl and jumped up.
“Right away, Your Majesty.”
In the spotless kitchen, Clark microwaved a new batch. Alexander and Hephaestion were dressed in jeans and T-shirts, feeling comfortable in them after Alexander’s question of, “We must dress like the Persians and wear trousers?” After complaining about how restrictive they were, he had grown accustomed to the pants.
Just took a little adjustment.
Clark wondered if wearing a Greek-style tunic would be uncomfortable. He looked down at his jeans-clad legs. His legs weren’t bad. Maybe he could pull it off.
He returned with the warm popcorn and cold bottles of Coke. The king was quite addicted to the soda.
“Lex?” asked Hephaestion.
“Can we order out for pizza?”
Clark and Lex looked at each other, then burst out laughing.
“You’ve officially adjusted to 21st century life here in America, General.”
“Yes, sir. Now, what kind of pizza would you like…?”
They settled on two large pizzas: one with grilled chicken, broccoli, and Greek olives, the other pepperoni-and-sausage. Lex added Greek salads to the order, both Macedonians smiling their thanks.
“You’re addicted to pizza.” Alexander slapped his companion’s knee.
“This is a bad thing?”
Alexander laughed and kissed Hephaestion, then turned back to the movie.
Clark blushed. He knew that the duo were lovers, but seeing it…and it was so casual and loving!
When the pizza arrived, Clark was still thinking of the kiss.
