(Preseason) Week 2: New England Patriots 22, Tennessee Titans 17 (Saturday, August 17, 2019)

The Pats faced a better opponent this week in Tennessee after a week of productive joint practices. Pats' rookies stood out: Chase Winovich and his high motor, Damien Harris with swift running ability, and Jakobi Meyers catching the ball and making plays. Second-year player Isiah Wynn also did well. He's virtually a rookie, as he spent all of last season on IR.

The back-up QBs had it tougher with the Titans' defense this week, but still managed to move the ball. The Pats trailed most of the game until late in the fourth quarter when they took the lead for good.

Tom did not play, but he might next week. The joint practices gave him plenty of work.

Some negatives were too many penalties taken by the Patriots, and Stephen Gostkowski missing a field goal again this week.

So next Thursday, the team hosts the Carolina Panthers. The third game is traditionally when more of the first team plays (the 'dress rehearsal'), so we shall see.

As for the rookies, well, a guy can tear it up in preseason and end up gone in the final cutdown before the regular season, but all of the guys I mentioned have made good cases for themselves to stick around. :)

Woodstock!!!

This weekend is the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. Groovy, man! :)

I've watched the classic 1970 documentary and a recent one on PBS's American Experience. Both programs stressed the lack of violence. Why not? Just about everybody was stoned most of the time! ;)

But I dig how there were comments about feeling there were other people out there like them. I felt that way when I attended my first Media*West Con. These were my people! They understood what I was talking about, my fannish jewelry, everything! :)

Woodstock sure was the high-water mark for the counterculture. The Summer of Love had been cool two years ago, and now there were three days of peace and music, and great music it was! Janis Joplin, The Who, Country Joe and the Fish, Joan Baez, Richie Havens, Jimi Hendrix...dozens more!

The counterculture kind of fizzled out in the '70s except for the die-hards. After the draft for Vietnam was over, the big protests stopped. Commune life, which had been a thing for almost a decade, fizzled, too. People got tired of doing the same old chores without any rotation for variety while others were smoking pot and just chillin'.

You know when you're in a group project at school or work? Everyone gets the same grade or a bonus. Those who really want that grade/bonus do all the work while others coast. Even hippies get tired of that.

There's still a counterculture out there, but nowhere near the numbers of the '60s/'70s. And every time they try to recreate Woodstock, they can't. Sure, they had to plan things to hold the event, but more than 400,000 people showing up? And the experiences they had? It was organic. It was a happening, man! :)

(Preseason) Week 1: New England Patriots 31, Detroit Lions 3 (Thursday, August 8, 2019)

Football is back, baby! :)

It's just preseason, but it's better to execute plays than not to execute, I say. :)

Few starters played, so it was the Pats' back-ups versus the Lions' back-ups, and ours looked like they knew what they were doing and the Lions looked clueless. The defense looked sharp and the offense crisp. Our kicker missed an easy field goal, so there's that.

Back-up quarterback Brian Hoyer looked the best he ever had in a Patriots uniform, going 12-for-14, and rookie Jarrett Stidham didn't look bad. Managed to throw for a TD and moved the offense pretty well.

Joint practices went well with the Lions last week. Aaron Rodgers of Green Bay doesn't like joint practices, but Brady and Belichick get a lot out of them, and will practice with the Tennessee Titans this week before their Saturday game.

Of course, next week they may look inept. So goes preseason! ;)
