Only two shows to review this week, but lots to say! :)

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. 3x11

Wow, long hiatus! Anyway, I feel like I’m watching episodes of Heroes with all this Inhuman hunting and weird powers popping up. I was pleased to see a Columbian hero, because her people really need her! How terrible must it to be to live in a country dominated by drug lords, with all the violence and kidnappings? The Government is powerless to stop them!

So the actor playing Grant Ward gets to play creepy again. I noticed that he only ate raw meat. Brrr!

Nice to see Phil get an upgraded artificial arm. And working with that crazy general again? That should be interesting in weeks to come!

Legends Of Tomorrow 1x8

Nice blast from the past in this latest episode. Of course, TPTB couldn’t seem to make up their minds whether it was 1958 or 1959. I saw it listed as both. :)

Creepy zombie-ish story. I loved seeing Sara in a nurse’s uniform! And Lindsey was a great character. While Martin was correct in saying that Sara was stirring up feelings in her that had to remain hidden (Stonewall is still 10/11 years away), Sara is correct in saying that Lindsey deserves to be told that the future will be better. I also liked the insight into Sara’s emotional state since Constantine freed her from the bloodlust of the Lazarus Pit.

Seems to me that people of the present who are always so smug and superior about society should pull back on those reins a little. Yes, things are a lot better in many regards, but let’s take a look at the whole picture, shall we?

Gays: have made huge strides since 1958/1959. Who would have ever thought we would see gay marriage in our lifetimes? But homophobia is still acceptable to far too many people. There are many parts of the U.S. and the world where two people of the same sex just walking down the street together holding hands are at grave risk, and there’s still rampant discrimination in jobs and housing. Organize religion feels emboldened enough to rant about gays as sinners and call for discrimination while declaring that viewpoint is their religious right.

Women: way more opportunities and equality but still struggling to get equal pay for equal work, and still being blamed for their own sexual assaults. The Madonna/whore view is more the latter now in pop culture (music, TV, movies, etc.).

Blacks: major strides (look at who’s in the White House!) but then we have all those incidents with the police in recent years, just to name one area.

So if you think you are superior in 2016 than those living in 1958/1959, just remember that in fifty years people will be looking back at you as if you were primitives when it comes to social conditions. Celebrate the accomplishments but realize that you’ve got a long way to go.

And you’ve lost some things: the culture is now way more crude and coarse than it was back then. Some people may feel it’s their right as an American to spew four-letter words anywhere and everywhere, but I think I could live without it. Same for an in-your-face attitude replacing courtesy and politeness (though the former can be excused in cases like Kendra being constantly mistaken for a maid!). Balance in everything, though I realize that’s not sexy enough.

Do I want to live in 1958/1959? No, I’m quite happy here in 2016 for many reasons, but it irritates me no end that people who are ignorant of history seem to think they know all about an era.
